“Do ostrich eggs need turned?” This is a question that we get asked a lot here at the farm. The answer simply put is no. Unlike chicken eggs ostrich eggs do not need to be turned in order to hatch. This is due to the fact that ostrich eggs have a “pits” or indentations on either side of the egg which allows the embryo to breathe without the need to be turned.
However we still recommend turning the eggs a few times a week. This helps to keep the yolk centered and the embryo from sticking to the side of the egg. It also helps to evenly distribute the heat which is essential for proper incubation.
If you are incubating ostrich eggs we recommend using an egg turner. This is a device that will automatically turn the eggs for you. This is a great option if you are incubating a large number of eggs or if you are incubating eggs from other species of birds that do need to be turned.
Here at the farm we turn our ostrich eggs by hand. We simply pick up the egg and roll it over to the other side. We do this a few times a week and the eggs hatch just fine. If you are incubating a small number of eggs you can probably get away with turning them by hand as well.
