There are a lot of different opinions out there on whether or not bleach can kill a snake. Some people say that it can while others claim that it’s not effective. So what’s the truth? Can bleach kill a snake or not?
Let’s start by looking at what bleach is. Bleach is a chemical compound that is composed of water sodium hypochlorite and often other additives. Sodium hypochlorite is a powerful oxidizing agent which is what gives bleach its bleaching properties. When mixed with water bleach can be used to disinfect surfaces and kill harmful bacteria.
So what does this have to do with snakes? Well some people believe that because bleach is a powerful oxidizing agent it can also be used to kill snakes. The theory is that when bleach comes into contact with a snake it will cause the snake to suffocate and eventually die.
However there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. In fact bleach is not recognized as an effective method of killing snakes by any major organization including the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
So what does this all mean? Well it seems that the best course of action is to err on the side of caution and avoid using bleach to kill snakes. There are other more effective methods out there that don’t come with the same risks.
