In the Disney film Princess and the Frog the shadow man is an otherworldly figure who seems to take an interest in the main character Tiana. He is first seen when Tiana is a child and he later appears to her as she is trying to make her dream of opening her own restaurant come true. While the shadow man’s motives are never made clear he appears to be a force for good helping Tiana when she needs it most.
The shadow man is voiced by Jim Cummings who also voiced the villainous Gaston in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. It’s possible that the shadow man is meant to be a representation of death as he is often seen in the company of frogs which are traditionally associated with death in many cultures. However the shadow man is never seen harming Tiana or anyone else so it’s also possible that he is simply a benevolent spirit who takes an interest in her story.
Whatever the shadow man’s true nature he is an intriguing and memorable character in Princess and the Frog. He seems to hold the key to Tiana’s success but whether he is a friend or foe remains a mystery.
