The rat’s name on ninja turtles is “Splinter”. He is a martial arts master and sensei who trains the ninja turtles in the ways of ninjutsu. He is also their adoptive father.
Splinter was once a human named Hamato Yoshi. He was a Japanese immigrant who moved to New York City and became a successful businessman. However Yoshi’s life was destroyed when he was framed for a crime he did not commit by a rival businessman Oroku Saki. Saki took Yoshi’s wife and child from him and Yoshi was forced to live on the streets.
One day while Yoshi was scavenging for food he came across four baby turtles. He took them in and raised them as his own. He named them after his favorite Renaissance artists: Leonardo Michelangelo Donatello and Raphael.
Yoshi taught the turtles everything he knew about ninjutsu. He also gave them their signature weapons. When the turtles were teenagers Yoshi was captured by Saki and his Foot Clan. Saki mutated Yoshi into a rat and left him to die.
The turtles rescued Yoshi and took him back to their sewer lair. They nursed him back to health and Yoshi took on the name “Splinter” after the injury that Saki had inflicted on him.
From then on Splinter was the turtles’ sensei and father figure. He taught them everything he knew about ninjutsu and helped them to become the crime-fighting heroes we know and love today.
