According to a recent study there are four different types of listening styles and each one is associated with a different kind of voice.
The four types of voices are:
1. The Placater
This person has a listening style that is associated with a calming voice. They tend to be good at making others feel comfortable and they’re usually good at defusing conflict.
2. The Assessor
This person has a listening style that is associated with a clear and direct voice. They’re usually good at problem-solving and they have a tendency to be straightforward.
3. The mimic
This person has a listening style that is associated with a voice that tends to mirror the emotions of the person they’re talking to. They’re usually good at empathizing with others and they have a tendency to be compassionate.
4. The silent type
This person has a listening style that is associated with you guessed it silence. They’re not good at communicating their own thoughts and feelings and they tend to be withdrawn.
The study found that the silent type is the least effective at communicating. In fact they’re rated as being worse than people who don’t talk at all.
If you find yourself in a situation where you’re trying to communicate with a silent type there are a few things you can do to try to get them to open up.
First try to be patient. It might take a while for them to feel comfortable enough to start talking.
Second try to be understanding. They might not be able to express themselves the way you want them to but that doesn’t mean they don’t have valid thoughts and feelings.
Third try to be direct. Ask them questions that require more than a yes or no answer.
Fourth try to be flexible. They might not be able to keep up with a back-and-forth conversation so be prepared to carry the conversation yourself.
Fifth try to be supportive. They might need some encouragement to open up so let them know that you’re there for them.
If you find yourself in a situation where you’re trying to communicate with a silent type remember that it’s important to be patient understanding and direct. With a little bit of effort you should be able to get them to open up and start talking.
