Rats are omnivores which means that they eat both plants and animals. The type of food that a rat eats depends on what is available to them. In the wild rats will eat a variety of fruits vegetables nuts seeds and bugs. If they live near a body of water they may also eat fish or other small aquatic animals. Domestic rats typically eat a diet of commercial rat food pellets which are made from a mixture of plant and animal ingredients. However rats enjoy a variety of foods and their diet should be supplemented with fresh fruits vegetables and nuts to provide them with the nutrients they need.
