Their diet consists mostly of small mammals such as voles lemmings and mice but they will also eat amphibians reptiles birds eggs and carrion. Garter snakes typically hunt for food at night using their sense of smell to locate prey. Once they have found their target they will use their sharp teeth to bite and hold onto their prey while they coil their bodies around it constricting it until it dies. They will then swallow their prey whole head first.
Common garter snakes are found in a variety of habitats including forests fields and wetlands. They are often seen basking in the sun on rocks or logs or swimming in ponds and streams.
