There are a lot of different types of ratings for movies. G PG PG-13 R and NC-17 are the most common. But what do they all mean? Here is a quick rundown of each rating:
G – General Audiences. All ages admitted. Nothing that would offend anyone.
PG – Parental Guidance Suggested. Some material may not be suitable for children.
PG-13 – Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.
R – Restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
NC-17 – No one 17 and under admitted.
So what’s the difference between R and NC-17? The main difference is that NC-17 means that NO ONE 17 and under is allowed to see the movie while R just means that those under 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. NC-17 is a newer rating so there aren’t as many movies with that rating.
Now that you know a little bit about the different ratings let’s talk about why only murders are rated R. The Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) rating system is voluntary meaning that filmmakers don’t have to submit their films to be rated. However most distributors will not release a film without a rating. The MPAA rates films based on several factors including violence sex language and drug use.
Films with excessive violence are often rated R. The violence must be depicted on-screen in a way that is realistic and not gratuitous. For example a scene in which a character is brutally killed by another character would likely earn an R rating. A scene in which a character is killed off-screen would not be rated as highly.

However a film can still be rated R even if there is no violence sex or drug use. For example if a film contains a lot of profanity it may be given an R rating.

When violence is depicted in a realistic and graphic way it can have a negative impact on children. That’s why the MPAA prefers to give films with excessive violence an R rating.
