The fox a species of canid with a voracious appetite has been known to invade human settlements in search of food. But one fox has taken this quest for sustenance to a whole new level: outer space.
In early September 2019 a juvenile fox named “Geri” was found aboard the International Space Station (ISS) having stowed away on a Soyuz rocket that launched from Kazakhstan on August 22. The fox is thought to have entered the rocket’s payload fairing an enclosure that protects a spacecraft’s cargo during launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome.
How the fox managed to survive the harsh conditions of spaceflight is a mystery but it is believed that he curled up in a ball to protect himself from the extreme temperatures and lack of oxygen. It is also possible that he went into a state of torpor a natural form of hibernation in which an animal’s metabolism slows down to conserve energy.
Whatever the case may be Geri is certainly a survivor. He is the first known animal to hitch a ride on a Soyuz rocket and he is also the first fox in space!
