After reading Deborah Harkness’s novel A Discovery of Witches I was interested to see how it would be adapted for television. I was not disappointed. The show is beautifully filmed with stunning scenery and excellent performances by the cast. The story is intriguing and well-paced with just enough twists and turns to keep viewers hooked.
The show follows historian and witch Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer) as she discovers a book that has the power to wake up dormant witches. This sets off a chain of events that see Diana having to use her own magic to protect herself and those she loves. Along the way she is joined by vampire Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode) who is also interested in the book.
The chemistry between Palmer and Goode is electric and their scenes together are some of the best in the show. The supporting cast is also excellent including Alex Kingston as Diana’s aunt Sarah and Emma Thompson as witch matriarch Goody Alsop.
A Discovery of Witches is a atmospheric engaging and ultimately empowering show that is sure to please fans of the novel and newcomers alike.
