Trick r Treat is a 2007 American anthology horror film written and directed by Michael Dougherty and produced by Bryan Singer. The film stars Dylan Baker Brian Cox and Anna Paquin. It centers on four children who dress up for Halloween and go trick-or-treating in their small town which is besieged by a series of unrelated murders.
The film was shot in Vancouver British Columbia in the fall of 2006. Trick r Treat premiered at the Fantastic Fest on September 22 2007 and was released in the United States on October 5 2007. The film received positive reviews from critics and was a modest box office success grossing $8 million against its $15 million budget.
While the film was rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for “weak bloody violence and some language and sexuality/nudity” Dougherty has stated that he always intended the film to be rated R. He felt that the film’s tone and style would be more appropriate for an adult audience and that a PG-13 rating would have forced him to make too many changes to the film.
Some of the violence in the film particularly a scene in which a character is decapitated was considered too intense for a PG-13 rating. In order to avoid an NC-17 rating Dougherty made a few changes to the film including reducing the amount of blood in the scene and removing a shot of the character’s head bouncing down the stairs.
Despite its R rating Trick r Treat has been praised for its positive portrayal of Halloween and its celebration of the holiday’s traditions. Dougherty has said that he wanted the film to be a love letter to Halloween and that he was inspired by his own childhood experiences trick-or-treating.
