According to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) a movie is rated R if it contains “some adult material and children under 17 are not admitted unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.” In other words an R-rated movie may contain adult themes adult activity hard language intense or graphic violencedrug abuse nudity sexual content or any combination thereof.
Some parents believe that an R-rating means a movie is inappropriate for anyone under the age of 17 but that is not always the case. There are many R-rated movies that are suitable for mature adolescents and adults. For example the movie “Schindler’s List” is rated R but it is an important historical drama that is appropriate for many older teenagers and adults. On the other hand the movie “Hostel” is also rated R but it is a gore-filled horror movie that is not suitable for anyone under the age of 17.
So why is “Don’t Look Up” rated R? According to director Adam McKay the movie is rated R because it is a “cautionary tale” about the dangers of climate change. McKay says “We wanted to make a big crazy comedy but also wanted to say something about where we are as a society.”
The movie is about two scientists who discover that a comet is on a collision course with Earth and only have six months to warn the world. However no one believes them and they are labelled as ” doomsday crazy.” As the movie progresses the two scientists must deal with the disbelieving world government bureaucracy and their own personal demons.
While “Don’t Look Up” is a comedy it also has a serious message about the need to take action on climate change. McKay says “I don’t want to soundling like Al Gore here but I do think this is the most important issue facing our planet and our children’s future.”
So if you’re looking for a funny movie with a serious message “Don’t Look Up” is definitely worth checking out. Just be warned that it is rated R for a reason and may not be suitable for younger viewers.
