Ostriches are the largest and heaviest of all living birds and they are also incapable of flight. Though ostrich flightlessness is well known the reasons for why these birds cannot take to the skies has been the subject of debate and research for many years.

There are a number of reasons that have been proposed to explain why ostriches cannot fly. One theory is that the ostrich’s wings are too small in proportion to its body weight. Ostriches also have relatively small breast muscles which are the primary muscles used in flying.

Another theory suggests that the ostrich’s bones are too dense and heavy for it to be able to produce enough lift to take off. This theory is supported by the fact that birds with lighter bones such as storks are able to fly.

Lastly it has been suggested that the ostrich’s feathers are not suited for flying. Ostriches have feathers that are more similar to those of other flightless birds such as penguins than to those of birds that can fly.

Regardless of the reason it is clear that ostriches are not built for flight. This does not mean however that they are completely helpless on the ground. Ostriches are able to reach speeds of up to 43 miles per hour (70 kilometers per hour) making them the fastest two-legged animals on earth.

So why don’t ostriches fly? There are a number of theories but the most likely explanation is that they simply aren’t built for it.
