Tortoises are reptiles that are best known for their hard shells. These animals are found in warm climates and spend most of their time on land. Tortoises are generally slow-moving creatures and are known to live long lives. When it comes to sleep tortoises can sleep for extended periods of time sometimes up to 16 hours in a 24-hour period!There are a number of reasons why tortoises sleep so much. One reason has to do with their metabolism. Tortoises have a slow metabolism and therefore do not require a lot of energy. This means that they can afford to spend a lot of time resting and sleeping. Additionally tortoises are cold-blooded animals and therefore their body temperature is determined by the temperature of their environment. When the temperature is warm tortoises are more active and when it is cooler they tend to be less active and sleep more. Finally tortoises are known to be very social creatures and often spend time in groups. When tortoises are in groups they tend to be less active and sleep more as well.
Why does my tortoise sleep all day?
Tortoises are most active in the morning and late afternoon/early evening so they may sleep for several hours during the heat of the day.
