Since its inception in 1996 Fox News has been embroiled in a series of controversies and accusations of biased and inaccurate reporting. These range from their coverage of the Iraq War to the 2016 Presidential Election. In many cases Fox News has been accused of outright lies and fabrication.
So why does Fox News lie?
There are a number of possible explanations. Firstly Fox News is owned by Rupert Murdoch a conservative media mogul who has been known to influence the network’s coverage. Murdoch is also the owner of The Wall Street Journal and The New York Post both of which have been accused of bias in their own right.
Secondly Fox News has a history of employing journalists with little to no experience in the field. This was most notably the case with their former chief political correspondent Carl Cameron. Cameron was a former country music DJ who was hired by Fox News despite having no journalistic experience.
Thirdly the network has been known to knowingly hire lying commentators. In 2015 it was revealed that Fox News had hired a former CIA officer Wayne Simmons as a contributor despite the fact that he had lied about his experience in the CIA.
Fourthly Fox News has been accused of deliberately misrepresenting the facts to fit their own narrative. In the lead up to the Iraq War Fox News repeatedly downplayed the dangers of Saddam Hussein’s regime and falsely claimed that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
Finally Fox News has been accused of using fearmongering tactics to increase ratings. In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks Fox News coverage was filled with fearmongering and misinformation about the threat of Islamic terrorism.
So there are a number of possible explanations for why Fox News lies. Whether it’s due to the influence of their owner Rupert Murdoch or the inexperience of their journalists the network has a history of inaccurate and biased reporting.
