Meghan McCain daughter of Senator John McCain left her position as a co-host of Fox News’ “The Five” on Friday.
“I have decided to leave ‘The Five’ and Fox News” McCain said in a statement. “I need to be honest with myself and my viewers about my opinions and the fact that some of my views no longer fit with the Fox News brand.”
McCain had been a contributor to Fox News since 2009 and a co-host of “The Five” since 2015.
McCain’s departure comes as Fox News is undergoing a major shakeup with the ouster of long-time CEO Roger Ailes in the wake of sexual harassment allegations and the recent departure of popular host Greta Van Susteren.
The network has also been embroiled in a lawsuit filed by former contributor Andrea Tantaros who accused the network of sexual harassment.
Sources close to McCain said that she had been considering leaving the network for some time and that the recent changes at Fox News had made her decision easier.
“Meghan has been unhappy for a while” one source said. “She was very loyal to Roger Ailes and she feels like she’s been betrayed by him.”
Another source said that McCain had been “frustrated” by the direction of the network under Ailes and that she felt her views were not being adequately represented.
“She’s been talking about this for a while” the source said. “She’s just been really unhappy.”
McCain’s father Senator John McCain was critical of Fox News during the 2016 presidential campaign saying that the network had “turned into basically a propaganda machine.”
However sources close to McCain said that her decision to leave Fox News was not political and that she had “genuine respect” for many of her colleagues at the network.
“She’s not happy with the direction of the country but she’s not leaving because she’s a Republican” one source said. “She’s leaving because she wants to be honest with her audience.”
