Whose Monkey Is It

It’s a common saying that when you have children you also get a pet monkey. But whose monkey is it really? The answer may surprise you.

A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology has found that children as young as six months old can distinguish between their own belongings and those of other people. This ability develops very quickly and by the age of two children are able to consistently recognize their own things.

Researchers believe that this demonstrates an early understanding of property ownership. Study authors say that their findings could have implications for future research on child development and the legal concept of ownership.

The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Iowa and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Germany. Itinvolved two experiments with infants and toddlers.

In the first experiment researchers showed infants aged six to 10 months pictures of different objects such as a toy truck or a stroller. The infants were then shown the same objects but with a slight change such as a different color or a different size.

The infants were then shown the original object again and asked to choose between the two. The researchers found that the infants chose the object they had seen previously more than 60% of the time.

In the second experiment researchers showed toddlers aged 18 to 24 months pictures of different objects such as a toy airplane or a teddy bear. The toddlers were then asked to choose between the original object and a new object that was similar but not identical.

The researchers found that the toddlers chose the original object more than 70% of the time.

Study authors say that their findings suggest that children have a clear understanding of ownership by the age of two. This understanding develops very quickly and does not require language skills.

Researchers believe that this early understanding of ownership could have implications for future research on child development and the legal concept of ownership.
