The idea for The Lion King originated from a 1989 pitch by screenwriter Linda Woolverton to Walt Disney Pictures chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg that was to be an animated musical film inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Katzenberg immediately green-lit the project after hearing the pitch and the story was quickly developed. Woolverton was hired as the film’s writer and gave the film a darker and edgier tone than most of Disney’s previous animated films. The studio brought together an A-list cast to provide vocal performances for the film including Matthew Broderick James Earl Jones Jeremy Irons Nathan Lane Whoopi Goldberg Cheech Marin Jim Cummings Moira Kelly and Ernie Sabella.

Disney wanted to release the film in the summer of 1994 to coincide with the release of the company’s live-action film The Flintstones. However due to production delays The Lion King was not released until June 15 1994. The film was a commercial success grossing over $987 million at the worldwide box office. It became the highest-grossing film of 1994 the highest-grossing animated film of all time the highest-grossing film in North America and the ninth-highest-grossing film of all time.
