The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 is a 2011 American romantic fantasy film directed by Bill Condon and based on the novel Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. It is the first film in The Twilight Saga film series to be rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America. The film stars Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner reprising their roles as Bella Swan Edward Cullen and Jacob Black respectively. Charlie Swan (played by Billy Burke) is the Chief of Police in Forks Washington Bella Swan’s father and Renée Dwyer’s ex-husband.
When Bella Swan moves to Forks Washington to live with her father Charlie she is initially unhappy. Charlie is overprotective of Bella and this causes some tension between the two. However as Bella gets to know Charlie she realizes that he is only trying to protect her and the two develop a close father-daughter relationship.
Charlie is a widower; his wife Bella’s mother died in a car accident when Bella was only four years old. This has caused Charlie to become overprotective of Bella as he does not want to lose her as well. Charlie is a kind and caring father but his overprotectiveness does sometimes cause tension between him and Bella.
Despite their sometimes strained relationship Charlie is very supportive of Bella and her relationship with Edward Cullen. When Bella becomes pregnant with Edward’s child Charlie is initially shocked and worried but he comes to accept the situation and is supportive of Bella and Edward.
Billy Burke was cast as Charlie Swan in March 2009. He had previously worked with Kristen Stewart in the film Zathura: A Space Adventure. Burke said of his character “I think Charlie’s just a great guy. He’s a small-town police chief blue collar. He’s the everyman.”
Burke also said that he enjoyed playing Charlie because he is a “normal guy” in the midst of all the supernatural elements in the Twilight Saga. He added “It’s always fun to play the normal one in the middle of all the craziness.”
Billy Burke was born in Bellingham Washington the son of Bonnie Burke a high school teacher and Frederick Burke a plastic surgeon. He has three sisters: Katie Hilary and Scarlett. He graduated from Sehome High School in Bellingham in 1989.
He began acting professionally in 1993 when he had a small role in the film Dazed and Confused. He has since appeared in a number of films and television shows including the Twilight Saga films Zathura: A Space Adventure Ladder 49 and Revolution.
