Michael Jackson was originally offered the role of the Scarecrow but he turned it down in favor of the Lion instead. Jackson was reportedly inspired to take on the role after watching Haynes perform in the original stage production. Jackson’s portrayal of the Lion was praised by critics with Roger Ebert writing that he “give[s] one of the most delightful of all the Wizard of Oz performances” in the film.
