“Alex the Lion” is the main character in the 2006 American computer-animated film Madagascar and its sequels Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa (2008)
and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (2012). He is voiced by Ben Stiller.
Alex is an African lion who was born and raised in the Central Park Zoo in New York City. He is best friends with Marty the zebra (Chris Rock)
Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the hippopotamus (Jada Pinkett Smith). In the first film he is captured by animal smugglers
and sent to live in a wildlife reserve in Africa where he meets and falls in love with Marty’s friend Gazelle (Shakira).
Alex is a brave and determined lion but he is also very protective of his friends and family. He is always quick to defend them when they are in danger
even if it means putting himself in harm’s way. Alex is also quite self-conscious about his large size as he feels that he is too big and clumsy.
But in the end he always uses his size and strength to help others.
