The Lion King is a 1994 American animated musical film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 32nd Disney animated feature film and the fifth animated film produced during the Disney Renaissance. The Lion King was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff produced by Don Hahn and has a screenplay credited to Irene Mecchi Jonathan Roberts and Linda Woolverton. The film tells the story of Simba a young lion who is to succeed his father Mufasa as king. However after Mufasa’s death Simba is tricked into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile. He is soon joined by his best friend Nala and his protectors Timon and Pumbaa. He eventually meets up with Rafiki who tells him that he has to return to his kingdom and take on his responsibilities. Simba-now an adult lion-returns home and takes down Scar with the help of his friends fulfilling his destiny to become king.
The Lion King was released to theaters on June 15 1994 to a massive commercial success becoming the highest-grossing film of 1994. The film grossed more than $967 million in worldwide box office revenue making it the highest-grossing film of all time for its original release. The film received critical acclaim with particular praise directed to its music story humor and direction. The Lion King was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture and won two for its original song “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and its original score. Rafiki: A mandrill who is a good friend of Mufasa and helps Simba when he is exiled from the Pride Lands. He is also the one who tells Simba that he is the rightful king.
Mufasa: Simba’s father Sarabi’s mate Sarafina’s brother-in-law and the king of the Pride Lands. He was killed by his evil brother Scar but his spirit lives on in the stars.
Sarabi: Simba’s mother Mufasa’s mate Sarafina’s sister-in-law and the queen of the Pride Lands.
Sarafina: Nala’s mother Mufasa’s sister-in-law Sarabi’s sister and a member of the Pride Land’s lionesses.
Scar: Mufasa’s younger brother Sarabi’s brother-in-law Sarafina’s brother and the former king of the Pride Lands. He was killed by Simba after he tricked him into thinking he was responsible for Mufasa’s death.
