The Snake River is one of the major rivers of the western United States and is the largest tributary of the Columbia River at 1078 miles (1735 km) long. It rises in western Wyoming in the Snake River Plateau in northeast Yellowstone National Park then flows through the Jackson Hole valley before entering Idaho. In Idaho the Snake River Plain was created by a volcanic hotspot which now lies underneath the Snake River headwaters in Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain is a flat shallow basin that slopes from the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming to the Pocatello Hills in Idaho.
The Snake River first enters Idaho from the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park. It is joined by the Henrys Fork River in eastern Idaho and then winds its way through the Snake River Plain. It is joined by the Boise River in southwestern Idaho and then flows through Hells Canyon the deepest gorge in North America. The Snake River then turns west and flows into Washington where it joins the Columbia River.
