Fox’s breakthrough role was as Marty McFly in the blockbuster film Back to the Future (1985). For his performance Fox was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. He reprised his role as Marty McFly in the sequels Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990).

In the 1990s Fox took on a number of dramatic roles. He starred in The Frighteners (1996) directed by Peter Jackson and he had a lead role in the Spielberg-produced television series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992–93). He also starred in the films Greedy (1994) Theorset (1995) and Marvin’s Room (1996).

In 2000 Fox made a return to comedy with his lead role in the film What About Bob?. He also starred in the short-lived television series Spin City (1996–2002) and in the films Stuart Little (1999) and its sequel Stuart Little 2 (2002).

More recently Fox has appeared in a number of films including The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014) Playing for Time (2015) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). In 2018 Fox starred in the lead role in the NBC comedy series The Michael J. Fox Show. The series was cancelled after one season.

Fox has been married to actress Tracy Pollan since 1988. They have four children together: sons Sam and twins Aquinnah and Schuyler and daughter Esmé.
