Michael J. Fox is a Canadian-American actor author comedian producer and activist. He is best known for his roles as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy and Alex P. Keaton on the American sitcom Family Ties.
Fox was born in Edmonton Alberta Canada to Phyllis (née Piper) an actress/singer and William Fox a police officer and Canadian Forces member. His parents moved to Vancouver British Columbia when he was two years old and he grew up there. He attended Burnaby Central Secondary School and now has a street named for him in Burnaby British Columbia.
Fox has a younger sister Kelli Fox who is also an actress.
Fox’s family moved to Los Angeles when he was 15 years old. He attended Burnaby North Secondary School in Burnaby British Columbia and Middletown High School in Middletown New York but he did not graduate. He instead decided to pursue an acting career.
Fox’s first acting role was as a regular on the Canadian television series Leo and Me produced by Terry Green. He had a small role in the 1977 made-for-television film Midnight Madness. In 1979 he portrayed Young Republican Alex P. Keaton in the episode “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” of the television series The Young Riders. This was followed by roles on the television series Lou Grant (1979–80) Palmerstown U.S.A. (1980) Trapper John M.D. (1981) and Family Ties (1982–89).
Fox’s film debut came in the 1981 film Midnight Madness in which he played an eccentric participant in a late-night scavenger hunt. He quickly followed this with roles in the features Class of 1984 (1982) Mr. T and Tina (1982) and SpaceCamp (1986).
Fox’s breakthrough role was as Marty McFly in the blockbuster film Back to the Future (1985). For his performance Fox was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. He reprised his role as Marty McFly in the sequels Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990).
In the 1990s Fox took on a number of dramatic roles. He starred in The Frighteners (1996) directed by Peter Jackson and he had a lead role in the Spielberg-produced television series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles (1992–93). He also starred in the films Greedy (1994) Theorset (1995) and Marvin’s Room (1996).
In 2000 Fox made a return to comedy with his lead role in the film What About Bob?. He also starred in the short-lived television series Spin City (1996–2002) and in the films Stuart Little (1999) and its sequel Stuart Little 2 (2002).
More recently Fox has appeared in a number of films including The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014) Playing for Time (2015) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). He has also made guest appearances on a number of television shows including Rescue Me (2010) Curb Your Enthusiasm (2011) and The Good Wife (2012).
In 2018 Fox starred in the lead role in the NBC comedy series The Michael J. Fox Show. The series was cancelled after one season.
Fox has been married to actress Tracy Pollan since 1988. They have four children together: sons Sam and twins Aquinnah and Schuyler and daughter Esmé.
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at the age of 29. He publicly disclosed his diagnosis in 1998 and has since become a prominent advocate for research toward a cure. He founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000.
