Foxes are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere. In North America they range from Alaska and parts of Canada to as far south as Panama. Foxes also live in Europe Asia and Africa.
In North America there are five main types of foxes: the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargentus) the kit fox (Vulpes macrotis) the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) and the Fennec fox (Vulpes zerda).
The red fox is the most common type of fox in North America. It is also the largest weighing in at around 8-15 pounds. The red fox’s coat is usually red with white underparts.
The gray fox is the second most common type of fox in North America. It is smaller than the red fox weighing in at around 5-10 pounds. The gray fox’s coat is usually gray with white underparts.
The kit fox is the smallest type of fox in North America weighing in at around 2-5 pounds. The kit fox’s coat is usually rusty red with white underparts.
The arctic fox is the only type of fox that is found in the Arctic Circle. It is small weighing in at around 2-5 pounds. The arctic fox’s coat is white which helps it blend in with the snow.
The Fennec fox is the only type of fox that is found in Africa. It is small weighing in at around 2-5 pounds. The Fennec fox’s coat is light gray with white underparts.
