Foxes are found throughout the Northern Hemisphere from the Arctic Circle to North Africa Central America and the steppes of Asia. In North America there are 12 species of true foxes in three distinct subfamilies: the species of the subfamily Vulpinae which includes the red fox Vulpes vulpes; the gray fox Urocyon cinereoargenteus; and the arctic fox Vulpes lagopus; and the species of the subfamily Alopexinae which consists of the kit fox Vulpes macrotis and the arctic fox.
The true foxes of Europe Asia and North Africa belong to the subfamily Vulpes which contains about 27 species. The red fox Vulpes vulpes is the most widely distributed of all foxes being found throughout the Northern Hemisphere from Arctic Circle to North Africa Central America and Asia. It is also the largest member of the Vulpes genus with some individual males weighing 8 kg (18 lb).
The fennec fox Vulpes zerda is the smallest member of the family weighing only 1.5–3 kg (3.3–6.6 lb). It is found in the Sahara Desert and in Syria Lebanon Israel and northwestern Saudi Arabia.
The gray fox Urocyon cinereoargenteus is found in the United States Canada Mexico and Central America.
