Trey Gowdy is a former United States Representative for South Carolina’s 4th congressional district. He is a member of the Republican Party. He was first elected to Congress in 2010.
Gowdy was born in Greenville South Carolina on August 22 1964. He graduated from Baylor University in 1986 and from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1989. He worked as a federal prosecutor in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of South Carolina from 1994 to 2000. He then entered private practice.
In 2010 Gowdy ran for the Republican nomination for Congress in South Carolina’s 4th congressional district. He won the primary election with 54% of the vote. He then went on to win the general election with 60% of the vote.
Gowdy was re-elected to Congress in 2012 2014 and 2016. He did not seek re-election in 2018.
Gowdy was a member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He chaired the Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Government Operations and the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Crime Terrorism Homeland Security and Investigations.
In October 2015 Gowdy became the chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi. The committee was formed to investigate the 2012 Benghazi attack.
Gowdy’s time as a congressman came to an end in January 2019. He joined Fox News as a contributor in early 2019. He provides commentary and analysis on the network.
