The events of Ant-Man take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron and before Captain America: Civil War.
In the film Scott Lang a former convict is recruited by Hank Pym to help him pull off a heist that will save the world. Pym has created a suit that allows him to shrink down to the size of an ant and he wants to use it to steal a valuable piece of technology from a powerful corporation.
The film takes place in the present day but it is set in the aftermath of the Battle of New York which occurred in the MCU film The Avengers. This means that Ant-Man is set in a world where superheroes are already established and respected.
