There are a few exceptions to this general rule. For example the wood frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) is one species that actually lays its eggs in the fall before winter sets in. The eggs of this frog spend the winter frozen solid and the tadpoles hatch out in the spring when the temperatures start to warm up again.
Other frogs in Michigan that don’t follow the usual pattern of laying their eggs in the spring include the plains leopard frog (Lithobates blairi) which can lay its eggs as late as July and the northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens) which can lay its eggs as early as April.
