Kermit the Frog is a Muppet created by Jim Henson. He is the protagonist of The Muppet Show and one of the most recognizable Muppet characters. Kermit is green with large eyes and a light-green collar. He typically wears a green felt hat and red necktie.
Kermit’s original design was created by Henson for an earlier puppet named Walter. When Henson was asked to create a frog character for Sam and Friends he reused the design. The character’s name was inspired by Henson’s childhood friend Kermit Scott.
The character made his first public appearance on May 9 1954 on the television program Sam and Friends. He subsequently appeared in numerous Muppet films and television series including The Muppet Show Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street. Kermit has also been featured in four Muppet movies: The Muppet Movie (1979) The Great Muppet Caper (1981) The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) and The Muppets (2011).
