This parrot named Polly was a gift to Washington from the Marquis de Lafayette. Polly was a very popular member of the family and was often seen perched on Washington’s shoulder or riding on his horse. She was even known to sit in on meetings and offer her opinion!
Sadly Polly died in 1799 just a few years after Washington’s death. But she is remembered as a faithful friend and companion and a reminder of the many interesting and unusual things about our first president.
