The Monkey B virus ( MBV) is a non-human primate specific reovirus that is the cause of a fatal respiratory disease in young macaques. The virus is closely related to the human Rotavirus which is the cause of a severe diarrheal disease in young children. The MBV was first identified in 1984 when it caused an outbreak of respiratory disease in a troop of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in Nagasaki Prefecture Japan. The virus quickly spread throughout the troop and resulted in the death of 41% of the animals. The MBV has since been identified as the cause of respiratory disease outbreaks in macaques in the United States Europe Africa and Asia.
The MBV is classified as a member of the Reoviridae family of viruses which are double-stranded RNA viruses. The MBV is a non-enveloped virus and has a diameter of approximately 60 nm. The virus particle is composed of two concentric shells each of which contains a single strand of RNA. The outer shell of the virus particle contains the major capsid protein while the inner shell contains the minor capsid protein. The MBV genome consists of 10 double-stranded RNA segments that encode for the proteins needed for virus replication.

Animals typically die within 7-10 days of the onset of disease.
There is no specific treatment for MBV infection and currently no vaccine is available to prevent infection. Infected animals should be isolated from non-infected animals to prevent the spread of disease. Staff should wear personal protective equipment when handling infected animals.
