Strickler was a 22-year-old soda jerk at a pharmacy in Indiana. He is credited with inventing the chocolate malt milkshake which was made with chocolate syrup malt ice cream and milk. The chocolate malt shake quickly became a popular menu item at the pharmacy and Strickler’s boss began to worry that he would leave and start his own business.
To keep Strickler from leaving his boss gave him a raise and a percentage of the profits from the chocolate malt milkshakes. Strickler stayed at the pharmacy for several more years before opening his own ice cream parlor in Ohio.
The chocolate malt milkshake quickly became a national phenomenon and chocolate syrup was soon added to ice cream to create the chocolate ice cream sundae.
Today milkshakes come in a variety of flavors and can be made with different kinds of ice cream milk and syrup. National Black Cow Day is a day to enjoy a delicious chocolate milkshake and to remember the man who invented this classic treat.
