Mamma Mia! is a 2008 musical romantic comedy film directed by Phyllida Lloyd and written by Catherine Johnson. The film is based on the 1999 musical of the same name which itself is based on the songs of Swedish pop group ABBA including the title song with additional music composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA. The film features an ensemble cast including Meryl Streep Pierce Brosnan Colin Firth Amanda Seyfried Dominic Cooper Ashley Lilley and Stellan Skarsgård.
The plot follows the story of a bride-to-be who on the eve of her wedding finds out that her father who she has never met is none other than Bill Anderson one of the three men who her mother has invited to her wedding. bill who is played by Brosnan is a successful businessman while the other two menHarry Bright played by Firth and Sam Carmichael played by Skarsgård are both divorced.
The film was a box office success grossing over $609 million worldwide making it the eighth highest-grossing film of 2008. The film received mixed reviews from critics with some praising the performances and production values while others criticising the plot and its adherence to the original stage musical.
The film was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards two Academy Awards and five British Academy Film Awards. It won three Satellite Awards three Teen Choice Awards and two MTV Movie Awards.
