Shepard Smith the former chief news anchor of Fox News Channel and one of the network’s most recognizable personalities has left the company.
The move was announced on Friday afternoon by Rupert Murdoch the executive chairman of Fox News’ parent company 21st Century Fox. Mr. Murdoch praised Mr. Smith as “one of the finest journalists” he had ever worked with but gave no reason for the anchor’s departure.
“Shepard Smith was one of the original members of the Fox News team and a true professional” Mr. Murdoch said in a statement. “His insights analysis and top-notch reporting will be missed.”
Mr. Smith who was with Fox News from its inception in 1996 had been publicly critical of President Trump in recent years. In March he called out the president for spreading false information about the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“Why is it OK for the president to make stuff up?” Mr. Smith said on his show “Shepard Smith Reporting.” “We report the news. He makes it up.”
In October Mr. Smith caused a stir when he said on his show that there was “no evidence” to support Mr. Trump’s claim that there was a “deep state” conspiracy against him.
Just last week Mr. Smith told viewers that he was taking a “long weekend” and would be back on Monday. His last show was on Thursday.
At the time of his departure Mr. Smith was one of the few remaining original members of Fox News’s on-air lineup. He was widely seen as a voice of reason on a network that has become increasingly partisan.
In recent months Mr. Smith had become an increasingly lonely figure at Fox News. He was one of the few anchors who did not toe the line for the network’s most loyal viewer Mr. Trump.
It is not clear what Mr. Smith will do next. He is said to have a non-compete clause in his contract that will prevent him from working for another news network for a period of time.
