Mufasa’s body was never shown on screen in The Lion King which led to many fan theories about what happened to it. Some believe that Mufasa’s ghost led Simba to his body so he could say goodbye while others believe that the hyenas ate Mufasa’s body. The most popular theory however is that Scar killed Mufasa and then disposed of his body.
There are several clues that point to this theory. First when Scar is telling Simba that Mufasa is dead he says “I killed him” before quickly correcting himself to say “the lioness”. This could be a slip of the tongue or it could be Scar admitting that he killed Mufasa. Second Scar is the only one who knows where Mufasa’s body is. He tells Simba that Mufasa is “down there” and when Simba asks where Scar says “you don’t want to look”. This could be because Scar doesn’t want Simba to see his father’s dead body or it could be because he doesn’t want Simba to know where he buried Mufasa’s body.
The most convincing piece of evidence however is the scene where Mufasa’s spirit visits Simba. In this scene Mufasa says “I will always be with you”. This could mean that Mufasa’s spirit is always with Simba or it could mean that Mufasa’s spirit is leading Simba to his body. This latter interpretation is supported by the fact that after Mufasa’s spirit disappears Simba walks towards the edge of the cliff and looks down. This could be Simba looking for his father’s body or it could be Simba looking for the place where his father died.
So what really happened to Mufasa’s body? We may never know for sure but the evidence points to Scar killing Mufasa and disposing of his body.
