The Truth Tortoise is a character from the TV show Rick and Morty. In the show the Truth Tortoise is a creature that lives inside of a person’s head and tells them the truth. In one episode the Truth Tortoise tells Morty that he is a bad person and that he should kill himself. Morty is shocked by this and asks the Tortoise why he should believe him. The Tortoise replies “Because I’m the Truth Tortoise. I only say things that are true.”
Morty is then faced with a dilemma: should he believe the Tortoise and kill himself or should he disbelieve the Tortoise and continue living? After much deliberation Morty decides to kill himself. However just as he is about to do so Rick shows up and tells Morty that the Tortoise was lying to him and that he should not believe everything he hears.
This story highlights the importance of being critical of the information we are given even if it comes from a source that we trust. Just because the Truth Tortoise is a creature that only speaks the truth that does not mean that everything it says is automatically true. We must always use our own judgement to determine whether or not something is true and not take things at face value.
