Michael J. Fox is a Canadian-American actor author comedian producer and activist. With a film and television career spanning from the 1970s Fox’s most notable roles have been Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985–1990) Teen Wolf (1985) The Secret of My Success (1987) and Mike Flaherty in the sitcom Spin City (1996–2000). He has won five Emmy Awards four Golden Globe Awards a Grammy Award and two Saturn Awards. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991 at age 29 and disclosed his condition to the public in 1998.
Fox semi-retired from acting in 2000 as his symptoms progressed. He has since become an outspoken advocate for research toward finding a cure and founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2000. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010. He also has advocated for stem cell research. since his diagnosis with Parkinson’s. In May 2016 Fox went public with his battle with Lewy body dementia.
Fox was born Michael Andrew Fox on June 9 1961 in Edmonton Alberta Canada to Phyllis (née Piper) an actress/payroll clerk and William Fox a police officer and Canadian Forces member.
Fox has an older sister Kelli Fox and a younger brother Steven Fox. His father died in 1964 when Fox was two years old. Fox was raised Protestant. He attended multiple schools in Edmonton and eventually graduated from William Awdry School in 1979.
When Fox was four years old his family moved to Vancouver British Columbia. His father wanted to move to the United States at the time but his passport had expired so they settled in Vancouver. Fox has described his father as “a man of great integrity who made incredible sacrifices for his children.”
Fox’s first acting role was in an episode of Ozzie’s Girls (1972) but his first major role came in the miniseries Leo and Me (1981). He subsequently starred in episodes of the sitcoms Room 222 (1981) and Family Ties (1982–83).
In 1982 Fox made his feature film debut in the teen romantic comedy Class of 1984. He subsequently starred in the films Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (1982) Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and The Edge of Night (1989).
Fox’s breakthrough role came in the 1985 sci-fi film Back to the Future as Marty McFly a high school student who is sent back in time to 1955. The film was a massive commercial success grossing over $380 million worldwide.
Fox’s next notable role was in the Teen Wolf films (1985) in which he played a teenage werewolf. He subsequently starred in the films The Secret of My Success (1987) and Bright Lights Big City (1988).
In 1991 Fox began experiencing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease and he was diagnosed with the condition the following year. He revealed his diagnosis to the public in 1998.
