In 1985 Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation (now 21st Century Fox) acquired Metromedia’s seven television stations which included KTTV in Los Angeles and WNEW in New York City for $1.55 billion. Fox Television Stations would eventually purchase more stations throughout the 1990s. In 1997 News Corporation purchased a controlling interest in the cable channel FX.
In January 1999 Fox Television Stations was restructured and given responsibility for the Fox Broadcasting Company Twentieth Century Fox Television and the Fox Kids programming block. All of the Metromedia stations were renamed Fox Television Stations and the FX cable channel was renamed Fox Sports Net.
In March 2019 The Walt Disney Company announced that it would acquire most of 21st Century Fox including the Fox Broadcasting Company Fox Television Stations and Fox News among other assets for $71.3 billion. The sale is expected to be completed by June 2019.
After the sale is finalized Fox Television Stations will be spun off into a separate company that will be owned by a trust controlled by the Murdoch family. Fox News Fox Business Network Fox Sports and the Fox television stations in the United States will be among the assets that will be owned by the Murdoch-controlled company.
