There’s a lot of misinformation out there about which college has the highest STD rate. So let’s set the record straight: STD rates vary widely from college to college and even from year to year. That said there are a few colleges that tend to have higher STD rates than others.
One college with a consistently high STD rate is the University of Arizona. In 2016 the school had the highest STD rate in the country with 1512 cases of chlamydia gonorrhea and syphilis reported. That works out to about 748 cases per 100000 students.
But Arizona isn’t the only school with a high STD rate. Other colleges with high STD rates include the University of Alaska Anchorage; the University of Mississippi; and Georgia State University.
So why do these colleges have such high STD rates? There are a few possible explanations.
One reason may be that these colleges have a higher proportion of students who are from low-income backgrounds. Studies have shown that people from low-income backgrounds are more likely to contract STDs.
Another possibility is that these colleges have a higher proportion of students who are sexually active. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it does mean that there’s a greater chance for STDs to be transmitted.
Finally it’s possible that these colleges simply have more open and frank discussions about sex and sexuality. This creates an environment where students feel more comfortable talking about STDs and getting tested for them.
Whatever the reasons it’s important for students at these colleges to be extra diligent about practicing safe sex. That means using condoms every time you have sex getting tested regularly and being open and honest with your partner about your sexual history.
If you think you may have contracted an STD it’s important to get tested as soon as possible. Many STDs can be easily treated with antibiotics but if they’re left untreated they can lead to serious health complications.
