What are these tiny ants?
These tiny ants are called Pharaoh ants. They are about 2.5 to 3 mm long and are light brown to yellow in color. They have a long slender body and two small node-like structures on their abdomens. Pharaoh ants are native to Africa but have been introduced to many other parts of the world including the United States.
In the wild pharaoh ants typically nest in the ground or in trees. However when they invade homes and other buildings they often nest in wall voids under floors or in other dark humid places. Pharaoh ants are attracted to sweets and other high-sugar foods but they will also feed on almost anything including other insects.
Pharaoh ants are considered a nuisance pest because they are difficult to control and can spread disease. They are also a danger to hospital patients because they have been known to invade intravenous (IV) bags and other medical equipment.
