What are the tiny black ants?
These small black ants are very common in homes throughout the United States. Many people refer to them as “sugar ants” because they are often attracted to sweets. However they will also feed on just about anything including other insects meats and greasy foods.
Tiny black ants are members of the Formica genus which includes more than 1000 species of ants. In the United States the most common species is the odorous house ant (Tapinoma sessile) which is about 1/8-inch long. Other common species include the little black ant (Monomorium minimum) and the pavement ant (Tetramorium caespitum) both of which are about 1/6-inch long.
While they are not aggressive tiny black ants can become a nuisance if they invade your home in large numbers. They can also be difficult to control once they get established. If you have a problem with these ants the best course of action is to contact a pest management professional.
