While it’s unclear whether sea bunnies are endangered, they are common enough to be considered non-invasive species.
These creatures are hermaphrodites, which means that they contain both sperm and eggs, but cannot fertilize themselves. They were discovered in 1938 by Japanese marine biologist Kikutaro Baba, but until recent years, most of us had no idea they existed. Luckily, a dive store in Japan filmed a video of sea bunnies in March 2014, and the footage has been gaining popularity.
In order to survive, sea bunnies must reproduce frequently and mature rapidly. They use their sensory organs to find their mates and food. Their ears are also thick and ‘fuzzy’. While it’s not known how exactly sea bunnies communicate with each other, they can recognize one another by their smell. And because of their unique sensory system, they can also lay their eggs on the bodies of their partners. These two traits help them communicate with one another in the wild.
While a sea bunny starts life in a shell, it sheds this before becoming an adult. Its appearance resembles a rabbit. Some caryophyllidia end in black knobs. They have two long antennae and small flaps on the sides. They have a short life span of a couple of months to a year. In addition to this short life span, they are also considered to be dangerous.
Like most sea slugs, sea bunnies are hermaphrodites. They reproduce by exchanging sperm and fertilizing eggs. As such, they act as both parents and direct siblings. Most sea bunnies are protected from predators as they belong to the dorid nudibranchs. Their natural defenses are scavenged from food, which helps them survive in harsh conditions. And, they are incredibly cute!
The ear structures on their heads are similar to those of a bunny, but they are actually furry. This gives the sea bunny its fuzzy look and more surface area for chemoreception. Another feature of this tiny creature is their crazy variation in color pattern. Some are entirely white, while others are black and yellow. One species even looks a little like a rabbit, albeit smaller than the other.
