On October 20 2010 Juan Williams was fired from his position as a journalist at Fox News. The firing came after Williams made comments on The O’Reilly Factor regarding his feelings about flying while Muslim. During the segment Williams said that he gets “nervous” when he sees passengers in “Muslim garb” boarding his plane. Williams went on to say that he tries to tell himself that these people are “probably just as worried as I am.”
Fox News released a statement following Williams’ firing saying that his comments “were not consistent with the standards of journalism” at the network. Fox News also announced that they were “terminating his contract immediately.”
This firing caused a great deal of controversy with many people arguing that Williams was simply expressing his personal opinion and that he should not have been fired for it. However others defended Fox News’ decision saying that Williams had crossed a line by making comments that could be seen as prejudiced against Muslims.
