According to a recent report from Variety it appears that the WWE’s Smackdown Live franchise may be moving to Fox next year. The report notes that while nothing is official yet Fox is the “frontrunner” to land the rights to the franchise which would see the show air on the Fox broadcast network.
If the move does happen it would be a major coup for Fox as Smackdown is one of the most popular WWE properties. The show currently airs on USA Network and is the second-most watched show on the network behind only Monday Night Raw.
Fox has been looking to add live sports programming to its lineup and WWE would be a perfect fit. The company already has a relationship with Fox as its flagship show Monday Night Raw airs on the Fox-owned cable network FS1.
WWE has been teasing a move to Fox for months even going so far as to air a promo during this year’s Super Bowl that featured Smackdown stars like John Cena and AJ Styles.
The move would also mark a significant change for the WWE as Monday Night Raw has been the company’s flagship show for decades. Moving Smackdown to Fox would allow the WWE to better promote its brand as Fox is one of the most watched networks in the country.
There is no word yet on when an announcement regarding the move could come but it is believed that Fox is hoping to have Smackdown on its network by the fall of 2019.
