Since its inception Fox News has been the go-to source for conservative news and views. But in recent years some have wondered if the network is losing its way. With more and more “ Fox News” stories popping up in liberal news sources and the network’s top brass engaging in public spats with the Trump administration it’s fair to ask: is Fox News going rogue?
The network’s relationship with the Trump administration has been rocky to say the least. Trump has publicly criticized Fox News on multiple occasions most recently tweeting that the network “isn’t what it used to be” and calling for a boycott of its morning show Fox & Friends.
But it’s not just Trump that Fox News is butting heads with. In February the network’s senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano made waves when he said on air that Trump had “committed a crime” by allegedly pressuring Ukraine’s president to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden.
Napolitano’s comments drew the ire of Trump who tweeted that the analyst was a “fool” and that Fox News should “bring back [former Judge] Andrew Napolitano.”
Fox News’s fallout with the Trump administration isn’t the only reason some are questioning the network’s allegiance to the conservative cause. In recent years liberal news sources have been increasingly quoting Fox News personalities in their articles.
One such personality is Shepard Smith the network’s chief news anchor. Smith has been critical of Trump on several occasions most recently calling his claim that he didn’t know about the now-infamous Ukraine phone call “simply not true.”
Smith’s remarks drew the ire of Trump who tweeted that the anchor was a “clerical error” and that Fox News should “bring back [former Judge] Andrew Napolitano.”
So what’s behind Fox News’s apparent move to the center? While it’s hard to say for sure there are a few possible explanations.
One is that the network is simply responding to the changing demographics of the country. As the U.S. becomes more diverse Fox News’s mostly white male and older audience is no longer as representative of the country as it once was.
