Fox News is an American basic cable and satellite news television channel that is owned by the Fox Entertainment Group subsidiary of 21st Century Fox. The channel broadcasts primarily from studios at 1211 Avenue of the Americas in New York City. Fox News is provided in 86 countries or overseas territories worldwide with international broadcasts featuring Fox Extra segments during ad breaks.
Fox News launched on October 7 1996 under the ownership of News Corporation as a 24-hour news channel. Rupert Murdoch who hired former Republican Party media consultant and CNBC executive Roger Ailes as its founding CEO is the chairman and acting CEO of Fox News. The channel grew during the late 1990s and 2000s to become the dominant cable news network in the United States. As of February 2015 approximately 94700000 American households (81.4% of cable satellite & telco customers) receive the Fox News Channel.
In 2019 Fox News was the top-rated cable network averaging 2.5 million viewers in prime time. CNBC was ranked 17th with 856000 viewers (down from 1.05 million in 2018). MSNBC was ranked 24th with 659000 viewers (down from 821000 in 2018)
As of June 2017 Fox News is available to around 86 million households in the United States (73.3% of pay television subscribers) and further to viewers internationally broadcasting primarily from its New York City studios.
The network operates under the umbrella of the Fox Corporation. The moves came as the Murdoch family Deals to sell much of 21st Century Fox to Walt Disney Co. are set to close in early 2019.
Fox News has been described as practicing biased reporting in favor of the Republican Party the George W. Bush and Donald Trump administrations and conservative causes while slanting against the Democratic Party progressive causes and liberal figures. Critics have cited the channel as detrimental to the integrity of news overall. Fox News employees have responded that news reporting operates independently of its opinion and commentary programming and have disputed accusations of bias. In February 1996 after former U.S. Republican Party political strategist and NBC executive Roger Ailes left cable television channel America’s Talking Murdoch asked him to start Fox News Channel.
Ailes worked individuals through five months of 14-hour days and several weeks of 16-hour days. He was able to procure $500 million to launch the network and hired a large number of former Republican Party operatives to shape the network’s right-wing slant.
In July 1985 20th Century Fox announced Murdoch had completed his purchase of 50 percent of Fox Filmed Entertainment the parent company of 20th Century Fox Film Corporation. A year later 20th Century Fox earned $5.6 million in its fiscal third period ended May 31 1986 compared to a loss of $55.8 million in the third period of the previous year. Murdoch formed the British broadcaster BSkyB in 1990 and with the help of investors injected $750 million into the company. By 1995 after the completion of the News Corporation-Sky Television plc merger Murdoch increased his stakes to 60 percent enough to take full control of the company.
In 1999 after losing a bidding war with NBC for the broadcast rights to the National Football League’s Sunday Night Football Murdoch decided to make the network more competitive by adding live sports programming to its lineup. Murdoch once again outbid CBS for the NFL’s broadcast television rights this time paying $8.3 billion for the Sunday and Monday Night Football packages.
In January 2007 Murdoch closed on his $12 billion purchase of Dow Jones & Company which included the Wall Street Journal and in February he was named its chairman and chief executive officer.
In October 2016 Murdoch stepped down as CEO of 21st Century Fox. He was succeeded by his son Lachlan Murdoch while Rupert Murdoch remained as executive chairman.
On July 27 2018 it was reported that Fox News had agreed to pay $10 million to settle sexual harassment lawsuits brought by at least 18 current and former employees. The lawsuits were settled by 21st Century Fox the parent company of Fox News.
In March 2019 it was reported that Fox News Channel had settled a lawsuit for $275000 that was brought by contributor Rod Wheeler. The suit alleged that Fox News and the Trump administration had colluded to concoct a false story that Seth Rich a former Democratic National Committee staffer was assassinated for leaking party emails to WikiLeaks during the 2016 election.
In 2019 Fox News was the subject of several lawsuits alleging racial discrimination. One lawsuit brought by 13 current and former employees alleged that the network “systematically and intentionally discriminates against people of color.” Another lawsuit brought by 18 current and former employees made similar allegations.
In May 2020 it was announced that Fox Corporation would be selling Fox News to cable television company Apollo Global Management for $2.25 billion pending regulatory approval.
