If you have the misfortune of being bitten by a fire ant there are a few things you can do to ease the pain and discomfort. First wash the area with soap and water to remove any venom that may be lingering on your skin. Next apply a cold compress to the bite to help reduce swelling. You can also try taking an antihistamine to help with any itchiness. If the pain is severe you can take over-the-counter pain medication or apply a topical corticosteroid.
If you are allergic to fire ant venom you will need to seek medical attention immediately as you may go into anaphylactic shock. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing hives and swelling of the face lips and tongue. If you experience any of these symptoms call 911 immediately.
