Most tortoises live in dry arid environments and as a result don’t need to be bathed very often. In fact too much water can actually be harmful to them. If your tortoise does need a bath follow these steps to make sure they stay safe and healthy.
Fill a shallow bucket or container with warm water and place your tortoise inside. Use a soft cloth or sponge to lightly clean their shell. Avoid using any soaps or detergents as these can be harmful to their health.
Once you’re finished cleaning their shell you can move on to their head and limbs. Gently wipe down their head and neck with a damp cloth. Their claws may also benefit from a light scrubbing with a toothbrush.
After you’re finished cleaning your tortoise allow them to soak in a shallow dish of warm water for 10-15 minutes. This will help to soften any stubborn dirt or debris that may be stuck to their shell.
Once they’ve finished soaking carefully lift them out of the water and place them on a towel to dry off. Make sure their shell is completely dry before returning them to their enclosure.
