Turtle and tortoise care sheet
A turtle or tortoise habitat should provide the animal with everything it needs to stay healthy and thrive. The following is a list of things to consider when building a habitat for your turtle or tortoise:
Size:

Water:
Water is an essential part of a turtle or tortoise habitat. The water should be deep enough for the animal to completely submerge itself but not so deep that it is difficult for the turtle or tortoise to get out. A good rule of thumb is to provide a water depth that is 1.5 times the length of the turtle or tortoise. So for example a Bog turtle would need a water depth of at least 6 inches (15 cm) whereas an Aldabra Tortoise would need a water depth of at least 6 feet (1.8 m).
Hide box:
A hide box is a small enclosure that provides the turtle or tortoise with a place to hide. The hide box should be big enough for the animal to completely fit inside and should be located in a corner of the habitat.
Plants:
Plants are not essential for a turtle or tortoise habitat but they can provide the animal with a place to hide and a source of food. If you choose to include plants in your habitat be sure to choose species that are safe for turtles and tortoises.
Lighting:
Turtles and tortoises need access to sunlight or artificial lighting that is designed for reptiles. The lighting should be placed on one side of the habitat so that the animal can move into and out of the light as needed.
Heating:
